After having lived in Houston for a few years now, I have gotten used to many things. Some things have grown on me, others not so much.
I love the fall and spring here. The weather is BEAUTIFUL. I love the summer thunderstorms that hit in the afternoon. There haven't been nearly enough of these this year though. I love all the magnolia trees, especially when they're in bloom, and I love how green it is here. There are a few other things. But lets now go to the things that I could definitely live without.
Snakes. Although I haven't seen a live one yet, in our 4 years here, just the thought of them gives me the creeps. Hurricanes. Okay, these aren't a given every year, but last years was bad enough to last for awhile. I do hope I won't have to go through another one. The month of August. It really isn't fun here in august, it's hot, the wasps are out, all the bugs are out actually, and there's no escape from them. Hence the whole reason for this post.
We were out a couple nights ago, visiting with some friends. The kids were all running around and it was dark out, and then Peyton started screaming. It was an awful, painful scream, and she was slapping at her legs. She had inadvertantly stepped into a pile of fire ants, and she was barefoot.
When I think of fireants, I think of big red ants, but these aren't. They're little ants, (they are red though), and they're MEAN! I can't believe how fast they got up her leg, they were all over inside her pants, (yes, she had pants on, it was after bedtime and she was wearing her pajamas.)
It took a good hour to calm her down, and get her feet feeling better before we could get her in bed that night. The next day, she had all these nasty bites on her foot, I counted and never got an exact count, but it was somewhere in the neighborhood of 36-40 bites!
Our poor little girl. Luckily a little benadryl and motrin helpes. Also, thank goodness she didn't have an allergy, her foot would have been the size if a balloon!

These pictures really don't do it justice, her foot looked awful, the other foot had a couple bites, but this one was much worse. Yes, we love some things about Texas, but there are many things that I would much rather live without!

Yeah, it was the heat and the bugs that decided us--we aren't moving to Texas after all. We just signed a contract in Oregon. I know you don't know me, so you probably don't care, tell Kevin we won't be headed out there. Also, if you run into my mom tell her to start talking to me again! (Ha, ha. She lives in Houston, and was sad we decided not to move there.) So sorry your lovely daughter got bitten so badly! Yikes.

I hate the bugs, and the fire ants, and the snakes (I've actually seen 3 in total), but luckily never been bit by any of them.
Poor Peyton glad she is ok.
ouch!!!! I have a really good solution...are you ready...here it is...MOVE TO CALIFORNIA!!!! :)
I HATE ants too! They never die...they just move from one spot to the next.
Poor Peyton! Just seeing the pictures and hearing about it made me want to slap at my legs and feet!
That is just so awful. That was a huge surprise for us when we moved out here. We thought they were just normal ants. But seriously, Eric and I have never had more than four or five at a time. I can't even imagine how painful that would have been. Hopefully its getting better quickly!
So sorry Peyton. Wha'd ya' do? Get an anteater for a pet. :)) (like my double chin) What a great idea!!!
Yikes! Who knew Texas could be so vicious! A kid living in Dgo just got his mission call to the Houston East mission. Is that where you guys are? I'll have to tell him to bring his bug spray. :) I hope those bites heal quick for little Peyton.
Poor little gal! Saryn has been hammered twice this summer with those darn fire ants! Hope they're on the mend!
Ouch! Poor little girl. I just got bit this week by 1 ant and it super hurts! I can't imagine all over.
visiting for the first time via tip junkie... I remember living in the Fort Worth burbs when I was in 3rd/4th grade. I remember my parents getting rid of a fire ant hill in our yard by dousing it with gasoline and burning it... I think those were the big kind of fireants...still painful if they bit you...
Let's see other things we saw and luckily never got bit or stung... scorpions, snakes, Red Hornets - those scared me to death!!
Eventhough I hate the bitter cold up here in the land of cheese and beer, we don't have the bugs that you have to contend with down south...
I hope your daughter is feeling better,too...
